SUMMARY:6th Grade Harvest-in-Action Tour
DESCRIPTION:6th grade students from all over Redwood and Renville counties jumped in the combine for harvest with farmer Bruce Tiffany.  This virtual experience followed the same students who were participants in 5th Grade Ag Day last spring.  Students were able to see the “fruit” of Bruce’s spring labor that they witnessed being planted last May. \nQuestions about affording large machinery\, crop yield after a dry season and combine technology were all honestly answered by Bruce.  He shared that his operation uses so many academic lessons that he learned in school; math\, engineering\, communication and science.  6th Grade educators were sent lessons to utilize before Bruce’s tour and after to increase student ag literacy about corn and crops but also about careers that Bruce engages with to create a successful farm operation. \n \nWatch Bruce’s Harvest Tour here: https://youtu.be/E8Kb5FKP550

SUMMARY:Little Acorn Sanctuary Farm Camp
DESCRIPTION:Minneapolis students were able to get a personal tour of Little Acorn Sanctuary during their summer program this July.  Owner Tara Lien introduced students to the goats and chickens that reside at LAS.  But there is something wonderfully different about the animals at LAS.  You see\, all of the animals at the sanctuary have been rescued after being abused\, neglected or abandoned.  Tara shared the powerful message that just like the animals\, we are all different but that doesn’t make us any less deserving of love\, care and attention.

SUMMARY:Maple Syrup Single Stop In-Person Farm Camp
DESCRIPTION:2nd and 3rd graders from St. Mary’s Bird Island were bused to the Aeikens Farm in Olivia\, MN to watch the process of sap turning to syrup!  Students not only got a first hand experience; they were put to work! \nFirst\, farmer and owner\, Ryan Aeikens showed students how to drill into a tree and pound in a tap.  He explained that he had to do that the previous week before students arrived.  Next students headed to the maple trees to see the hoses and even taste some of the sap. “It tastes like honey\,” one student suggested.  Students then carried 5 gallon pails of sap to the burner.  Kelsie Aeikens\, owner\, explained how the boiling process works.  Students were able to see the machine Kelsie and Ryan created to make boiling the sap easier and cleaner.  Kelsie then took students inside their shed to view the filtering process of the boiled down syrup.  Each student walked away with a small bottle of syrup and a whole lot of memories!
