From Greenhouse Dreams to Real World Scenes
For the eighth graders at Stride Academy, agriculture isn’t just something they read about in textbooks, it’s part of their school culture. From beehives to pollinator gardens, these students are already hands-on environmental learners. But their Farm Camp Minnesota experience, thanks to their transportation grant, on May 8 took things to the next level.
With visits to Produce Acres, an organic fruit and vegetable farm, and DCI Inc., a facility that manufactures dairy equipment, students experienced agriculture in action. Along the way, they discovered new career paths, tasted food straight from the field, and found out just how far science and sustainability stretch in the world of farming.
For schools looking for interactive and meaningful agriculture field trip ideas for middle school, this one hit all the right notes.
Classroom Prep Before the Adventure
Before stepping into the field, students explored key agricultural concepts through lessons that brought context and excitement to the day. In one activity, they compared organic and conventional farming with What’s the Difference?, preparing them for Produce Acres, a USDA Certified Organic Farm. They also studied milk processing in From Cow to Carton, giving them insight into the work done at DCI Inc.
This preparation turned the field trip into more than just a visit. It became a real-time extension of what they had already begun to understand.
Highlights from the Farm Camp Experience
At Produce Acres, students tasted rhubarb, fed cows, and learned how composting creates a sustainable loop from waste to soil to crops. They were fascinated by edible weeds like dandelions and amazed that sunflowers follow the sun. One student called the farm “so peaceful,” while another shared that they had no idea a farm could be so large.
At DCI Inc., students got a completely different view of agriculture. They saw how dairy tanks are built and learned how engineering, welding, and design all play a role in getting food to tables. “I didn’t know engineering was part of agriculture,” one student said.
Real Learning with Real Impact
After their day in the field, 91.5 percent of students said they felt knowledgeable about the businesses they visited, up from 57.9 percent before the trip. They walked away knowing more about careers in agriculture, sustainability, and how the systems behind their food actually work.
One student shared, “Agriculture is the single largest employer in the world.” Another was amazed to learn that plants can communicate, respond to sound, and even sense time.
Why Does Farm Camp Minnesota Matter?
Stride Academy’s commitment to sustainability includes school gardens, pollinator projects, and hands-on environmental learning. Farm Camp Minnesota gave students a powerful way to connect that work with real farms and businesses.
Carie, a teacher at Stride, said:
“I am so proud of our student scholars for earning this opportunity and can't wait for them to have the experience.”
For schools looking for meaningful, educational, and exciting agriculture field trip ideas for middle school, Farm Camp Minnesota proves how impactful these experiences can be.
