Maple Syrup Single Stop In-Person Farm Camp
03/17/2021 @ 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm
2nd and 3rd graders from St. Mary’s Bird Island were bused to the Aeikens Farm in Olivia, MN to watch the process of sap turning to syrup! Students not only got a first hand experience; they were put to work!
First, farmer and owner, Ryan Aeikens showed students how to drill into a tree and pound in a tap. He explained that he had to do that the previous week before students arrived. Next students headed to the maple trees to see the hoses and even taste some of the sap. “It tastes like honey,” one student suggested. Students then carried 5 gallon pails of sap to the burner. Kelsie Aeikens, owner, explained how the boiling process works. Students were able to see the machine Kelsie and Ryan created to make boiling the sap easier and cleaner. Kelsie then took students inside their shed to view the filtering process of the boiled down syrup. Each student walked away with a small bottle of syrup and a whole lot of memories!
