Camp IGNITE: Connecting Students to Agriculture at Rebel Rooster Farm

On July 29, 2026, 171 Camp IGNITE students stepped onto Rebel Rooster Farm for a day of hands-on learning with Farm Camp Minnesota. Students met farm animals, learned where their food comes from, and discovered just how much work goes into caring for a farm every day.

Hosted through Farm Camp Minnesota, a program of the Minnesota Agriculture in the Classroom Foundation, the experience gave students a chance to see agriculture up close and connect it to their everyday lives.

Learning on the Farm

At Rebel Rooster Farm, students explored a diverse farm and quickly discovered there was more to see and learn than they expected.

They met chickens, quail, cattle, the farm dog, and even the cat. Getting to interact with the animals was a favorite part of the day, especially the chance to pet chickens and experience farm animals up close.

Along the way, students learned about raising livestock, farm safety, and the daily responsibilities that come with caring for animals and a farm.

Some of their biggest takeaways came from seeing just how much happens on a farm. One student was surprised "that farms can have more than one thing," while another pointed to "how much work you have to do every day."

Another student summed it up this way:

"I can explain that most people think that farmers just have to plant and harvest but there is so much more."

Connecting Agriculture to Everyday Life

The day also helped students make connections between what happens on a farm and their own lives.

They learned about raising animals for food and discovered differences between animals of the same species.

One student shared, "I learned that sometimes there can be a lot of difference in the type of cows. Not all cows are the same."

For others, the experience helped them recognize just how much agriculture is part of everyday life.

One student said they were surprised "that our life is mostly agriculture."

Student surveys reflected that growing understanding. Before Farm Camp, 89% of students agreed or strongly agreed that agriculture is important in their lives. After the visit, that increased to 95%.

Transportation Support Makes Farm Camp Possible

The Camp IGNITE visit was supported by a Transportation Grant through the Minnesota Agriculture in the Classroom Foundation. Transportation Grants help reduce bus costs and make it easier for more students to experience agriculture beyond the classroom.

Camp IGNITE Coordinator Melissa shared how meaningful those opportunities are for students:

"I wanted to thank you all again for making this possible. In our student, staff and caregiver surveys, field trips came back as their top joy of camp...it wouldn't be possible without your collaboration...so grateful."

Bringing Agriculture to Life

Farm Camp Minnesota connects students to agriculture through classroom learning, hands-on farm or agribusiness experiences, and opportunities to make career connections.

For Camp IGNITE students, a summer day at Rebel Rooster Farm meant meeting animals, asking questions, learning where food comes from, and seeing firsthand how much care and work goes into agriculture.

It is the kind of learning that is hard to recreate inside a classroom.
